As a primary grant partner, SEAAHEC hosted its first health literacy workshop during Discovery MedCamp, a SEAAHEC-sponsored summer camp for high school students designed to promote career exploration. Discovery MedCamp is hosted on the Auburn University campus and allows campers to discover a variety of health care professions, exploring health care career paths through a series of hands-on activities and presentations.
Discovery MedCamp 2022 hosted 28 campers. Participants included high school students (Grades 10-12) ages 14-18 years old residing in the following Alabama counties: (1) Chilton, (1) Tuscaloosa, (1) Barbour, (1) Mobile, (1) Autauga, (1) Marengo, (1) Coffee, (1) Houston, (1) Bullock, (2) Lee, (2) Randolph, (2) Geneva, (3) Jefferson, (4) Elmore, (6) Montgomery.
On Tuesday, June 8th, Ayanna Sterling, Health Literacy Program Manager, conducted a presentation on Credible Sources for Teens & Young Adults. The hour-long presentation focused on identifying influencers of health information, including family, peers, news, and social media.
The presentation also provided the campers with tips when searching for health information through a hands-on activity that allowed them to use online sources such as blogs, news outlets, Google Scholar, and government websites to test their ability to recognize credible sources of health information online.
