Serving Elmore, Montgomery and Pike Counties

About The Initiative

In July 2021, the City of Montgomery and other grant partners, were awarded $3.9 Million by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' - Office of Minority Health as part of the federal Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 Initiative.

The Central Alabama Neighborhood Health Initiative (CANHI) was founded to collaboratively increase the rates of COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, increase health literacy, improve patient experience, and patient-provider relations in Elmore, Montgomery, and Pike Counties.

CANHI will demonstrate the effectiveness of working with local community-based organizations to develop health literacy plans. The hope is to increase the availability, acceptability, and use of COVID-19 public health information and services by racial and ethnic minority populations.

Using local data, we will identify communities at the highest risk for health disparities and low health literacy as well as those not currently reached through existing public health campaigns.
